<BODY>…</BODY> (contains all the objects of the document, such as text, links and pictures)

There are also tags that create special objects:
<TABLE>…</TABLE> (creates a table on your web page)
<HR> (makes a horizontal line)

Most tags consist of two parts – opening and closing. An exception here is the <HR> tag. A few others don’t need to be closed either:

How to place an image and text side-by-side, to give your web page a more balanced look, and to make use of all white space:

Recall we talked about the <IMG SRC=…> tag? Simply put an align=left or align=right inside it like this: <img src=myimage.gif align=left width=100 height=200>

Right after the image tag start typing your text. The graphic will automatically be displayed to the left of text. You could create a table and put a picture and text in two separate columns, but this is much faster to do and if your text is long enough it will wrap around the graphic which can’t be achieved using a table.
If the graphic is too close to the text, you may adjust it by adding two more attributes to the tag – vertical space and horizontal space, like this: <img src=ebay.gif align=left hspace=5 vspace=5 width=100 height=200>

The playing field is equal on the Internet irrespective of the size of the business and hence Search Engine Optimization becomes so necessary. Most surfers arrive at a particular web site after a search. About 75% of web users in North America use search engines performing about 4 billion searches in a month. Briefly put, search engines are responsible for directing visitors to a website. Sadly, not many business owners know how to get their web sites listed in the databases of search engines, nor do they know how to get their site a higher rank when related key words are searched for.

How SEO works?

Several ecommerce sites face the problem of shopping cart abandonment. Web sites face an average abandonment rate of 30% or more. The main reasons for shopping cart abandonment are:

If a website has to be listed in a search then either it has it to be submitted or has to be among the ones indexed by search engine robots (bots) that travel across the web in search of web sites to add to their database. In order to rank higher, web sited must be optimized appropriately. Ranking is important from a statistical point of view as in the first site listed in the results page of a search engine is visited by thrice the number of people than the fifth site, result sites found on the first page of search are visited 78% more than the ones found between 11th and 30th.

Having the correct key words and a high amount of link popularity is the key to SEO.
The higher the frequency of the keywords and the higher the number of links to you site especially from similar websites, the better the ranking.

Search engines like Google look at links for a web site as validation. More validation means that a web site is listed higher in search results, provided it is well optimized.

A few companies try an illegitimate techniques called ‘black hat’ to increase rankings by building link farms. The companies make these farms by creating numerous websites usually of similar content all linking back to the main site. However, web sites using this and other black hat techniques always run the risk of being caught and not being listed in search engines at all.

Web Sites with graphic content can be optimized to suit search engines, as the latter are incapable of transforming pictures into words. However, this problem can be overcome by placing key words in a concealed bot recognizable code (known as alt tag) connected to each image and by providing small captions above the images.

Other type of hidden text known as meta tags can be inserted into the web page code for eg. page header, description and key words found in the web site. Although search engines don’t consider them as that important these days following meta tag abuse, any type of optimization helps the web site.

Another way to optimize your web site is by using key words in place of hyperlinks in a web site. The key words in the links get captured by the robots that are in the search of them for adding to their database.

The second most important phase in their basic training is diligent study of Internet vocabulary. Studying is a way to own the new knowledge.

When a student fails to study, in time the knowledge evaporates like water on a hot summer day. What a waste of time and energy!

Prior to beginning, we want you to totally forget any preconceived notions that working a computer will be difficult to master. There are students as young as seven years old that are not having problems working computers.

We have found that many of the ordinary mistakes made using computers have a lot to do with their Internet vocabulary and not following instructions. Simply follow computer basics instructions completely and you will do just fine.

Also, rest assured that your computer has built-in some safeguards for not making critical errors in judgment; it even has safeguards for some of the less critical ones as well. As for Internet vocabulary just continually study.

Throughout this computer basics course and any time you are not certain of a certain course of action on your computer do one or all of the following:

1) Reread the instructions meticulously
2) Do some research
3) Ask someone that knows

Lets just get started with the computer basics, when I start any new study, I always begin by being familiar with the words used and there meanings. So I am including an Internet vocabulary list and their general meanings.

This short Internet vocabulary list will be most helpful in giving you the necessary computer skills for getting increased web traffic and save you loads of computer time.

Internet Vocabulary
The computer basics notations below in red or listed important are note worth and particularly (important Internet vocabulary)

Address bar- At the top of your web browser where you type the address of the web site you want to view (e.g. www.domain.com, http://www.domain.com, https://www.domain.com)

Internet Vocabulary Note: When typing addresses whether email addresses or web addresses they must be typed exactly with no spaces or other characters.

Antivirus software (important Internet vocabulary)- a yearly subscription to keep your computer virus free of malicious invaders.

It is very important that after downloading software that you are not familiar with, right click the downloaded icon, in the list that appears click the link that says ‘scan with’ your antivirus software to ease your fears that you did not download a computer security hazard.

If it is a security hazard, right click the downloaded icon to delete the icon immediately.

Backup (important Internet vocabulary)- it is very important to purchase rewrite able cds (CD-RW) to backup your computer data on a regular basis and to store them in another location. That way if your computer becomes disabled you will have another way to reinstall your data on another computer.

Bookmarks- a button on the browser main menu that allows you to save web pages you may want to go back to at a latter time, also called your ‘favorites’

Browser- a program used to view or manipulates Internet web pages

Computer partitions- storage physical divisions (drives) of your computer (a:, b:, c:, d:, etc.)

Computer Program (application)- computer software for specific purposes

Computer search- this search is similar to Google search except that you do not have to be connected to the Internet and your search will be limited to files on your computer

Control panel- the window that gives you access to the critical functions of your computer

Copy & paste- to keep from typing the same data over and over, you can simply copy & paste your data.

To copy: highlight the data and then while holding the ctrl key and the letter c.

To paste the data: hold the ctrl key and the letter v as many times necessary.

Database program- an application to process lists

Data units- bit is one keystroke (kilobits – thousands of bits, megabits – thousands of kilobits, and gigabits – thousands of megabits), when downloading you will see this notation kb/sec (kilobits per second) or the percentage of progress.

Before you download any thing into your computer you should know about how much storage space your computer can store, how many data units it has available for storage. You cannot download files if your computer does not have enough memory (data units) to hold it.

Fragments- From time to time some of your files in your computer may be misfiled. This is called fragmentation, on your computer you have an application called a defragmenter. You may want to run this application on occasion to fix fragmented files.

Descriptions- search engines will provide you with a short description (usually up to 200 characters) of relevant web pages

Desk top- this is the window where you can access your personal programs and applications

Dial-up connection- the slowest way to connect possible to access the Internet

Disk cleanup- this application is similar to your defragmenter except that it will scan your computer to find files that are unnecessary and gives you and opportunity to delete them to save disk space.

Download- a process of file transfer from the Internet

DSL- The fastest way possible to connect to the Internet

Email- the most necessary and used communication program in your computer

Firewall (important Internet vocabulary)- A firewall is software or hardware that checks information coming from the Internet or a network, and then either blocks it or allows it to pass through to your computer, depending on your firewall settings.

Firewall- A firewall can help prevent hackers or malicious software (such as worms) from gaining access to your computer through a network or the Internet. A firewall can also help stop your computer from sending malicious software to other computers.

Even if you think there is nothing on your computer that would interest anyone, a worm could completely disable your computer, or someone could use your computer to help spread worms or viruses to other computers without your knowledge.
Files & folders- file is the designation of things added to your computer e.g. *.gif*.doc. Folder is the designation that like files goes into e.g. c://foldername/filename.*

FTP- file transfer protocol is a program to facilitate file transfers

Google search- the way to access the thousands of web pages on the Internet. Simply type in the search box the information you are interested (a keyword or keyword phrase) in and click the enter key and the Google search engine will provide you with the most relevant web pages of your request.

Hard disk- your main storage partition in your computer, it is also called the c
drive

Help- Many of the windows programs/applications on you computer will have a link at the top of the main menu named help, it is advisable to skim through them. Also, before you subscribe to web sites online read through their FAQ (frequently asked questions).

Internet- A computer network, a way of communication

Keystroke- a typed space or character entered

Keyword/Keyword Phrase- the most relevant word related to a web page, usually one, two, three or four words (but never five).

Menu- usually at the top of most windows is a list of options for manipulating the page attributes (e.g. word process menu: file, edit, insert, format, tools, table, window, help). Menus are generally the same from program to program with slight variations.

Microsoft task launcher- a window with a number of useful applications for use on your computer

Printer/Scanner- prints and scans using your printer or the print menu in your computer applications

Save your work- while you are working your programs, you should regularly save your work.

Spam computer basics- The act of sending unsolicited email (sending advertisements without permission) reference the Can Spam Act

Sleep mode – If you do not enter keystroke within twenty minutes your computer will hibernate automatically.

Spreadsheet program- an application to process mathematical equations

Start menu- when you start your computer click the start button (the circular icon with the windows logo) to open your windows or shut down your computer.

System restore (important Internet vocabulary)- an application used to turn your computer back to an earlier time

Internet Vocabulary Note: It is a very good idea to keep a daily journal of each day you your computer, if for no other reason than keeping track of your computer hours and to remind yourself what you did or plan to do.

Switch between windows- windows where to view your open windows and switch between them

Task bar- a menu of open windows at the bottom of the screen of your computer.

Upload- a process of file transfer from your computer to another computer or server

Windows- a page on which you can manipulate data. Many of your windows will have three little boxes at the top right side of the page.

The first box having a dash when clicked will reduce the size of the window or send it to your task bar at the bottom of your screen. Second box will resize the window. The box with the red x will close the window.

Windows defender (important Internet vocabulary)- it is important to run antispyware software whenever you’re using your computer. Spyware and other potentially unwanted software could try to install itself on your computer any time you connect to the Internet.

It can also infect your computer when you install some programs using a CD, DVD, or other removable media. Potentially unwanted or malicious software can also be programmed to run at unexpected times, not just when it is installed.

Windows updates (important Internet vocabulary)- you should go online daily to download/install the latest (important and recommended) updates for your computer

Word processor (Notepad)- an editor application to process data

Word processor (Microsoft word)- an editor application to process data

WWW- World Wide Web (w3c- world wide web consortium) a system of interlinked computers by way of the Internet

Internet Vocabulary Note: Most people mistakenly think that we are still in the information age. The truth is, we are in the communication era. The information age was the proliferation of technology such as fax on demand, audiotape, the Internet, voicemail and the like.

Nevertheless, today we find ourselves in the communication age; the age of technological enlightenment and the ones that are most able using the technology of the information age will surely make more money.

The Internet is nothing more than a communication tool to send a marketing message to your target audience. It is just like using business cards, fliers, brochures, radio & TV ads, bulletin board ads, etc.

The preeminent thing about using this tool is for the reason that when used wisely you can spread your message to a wider audience with the help of the major search engines for getting increased web traffic.

The best part of the computer basics is that search engines are the ultimate free advertising method.

When it comes to your website, extra attention should be paid to every minute detail to make sure it performs optimally to serve its purpose. Here are five important rules of thumb to observe to make sure your website performs well.  Your web site is your “store”, and it is where you meet and greet your customers.  If your store is junky looking, then people will probably not come in to look around.

Do not use splash pages!
Splash pages are the first pages you see when you arrive at a website. They normally have a very beautiful image with words like “welcome” or “click here to enter”. In fact, they are just that — pretty vases with no real purpose. Do not let your visitors have a reason to click on the “back” button! Give them the value of your site up front without the splash page.

The big thing right now is to put up an “Opt-in page” that requires your visitor to give you their name and email, in return for some free product or report, before they can proceed to your sales page.  This is a good way to build a list, but the danger is that many people will not give their name and email, they will just click and leave, and that is a potential sale gone.  On the other hand, if you can offer a good enough incentive for them to sign up for your list, then you gain a valuable name to send your follow-up emails to, and you still get to send them on to your sales page. I recommend using Aweber Autoresponder to handle building your subscriber list.

Do not use excessive banner advertisements!
Even the least net savvy people have trained themselves to ignore banner advertisements so you will be wasting valuable website real estate.  I personally cannot remember the last time I clicked on a banner ad. Instead, provide more valuable content and weave relevant affiliate links into your content, and let your visitors feel that they want to buy instead of being pushed to buy.  Here is a sample of how you could weave a link into your content for a video that shows  how to build a web site using a free WYSIWYG HTML editor .  I’m referring to Kompozer, which is a free WYSIWYG HTML editor that works very well.

Have a simple and clear navigation!
You have to provide a simple and very straightforward navigation menu so that even a young child will know how to use it. Stay away from complicated Flash based menus or multi-tiered drop down menus. If your visitors don’t know how to navigate, they will leave your site.  Every page should have clear navigation links that allow visitors to get to wherever they want on your site.  Don’t make them use the “back” button to get back to previous pages.

I prefer to create an xml sitemap to submit to Google sitemaps for SEO purposes, and at the same time, you can create an HTML version of the sitemap and put a link to it on your site, usually at the bottom of the page.  This sitemap will give your visitors quick access to any page on your site.  What’s more, the search bots love it, so it can help you get your pages ranked in the search engines.

Have a clear indication of where the user is!
When visitors are deeply engrossed in browsing your site, you will want to make sure they know which part of the site they are in at that moment. That way, they will be able to browse relevant information or navigate to any section of the site easily. Don’t confuse your visitors because confusion means “abandon ship”!

Avoid using audio on your site!
If your visitor is going to stay a long time at your site, reading your content, you will want to make sure they’re not annoyed by some audio looping on and on and on on your website.  I will leave a site in a heartbeat if it has an annoying audio commercial blasting at me constantly.  If you insist on adding audio, make sure they have some control over it — volume or muting controls would work fine.

With that being said, some of the “experts” now are saying that you have to have audio (and video) if you want to be part of the Web 2.0 scene and appeal to the new breed of web surfers.  You need to create videos and podcasts and put them on Youtube and other social site as well as having the audio/video snippets on your web page.  You can always  get more information about making your own Camtasia videos and creating your own podcasts if you are interested.

There are many more rules that apply when creating a good web site, but following just these five will get you off to a good start.
